I feel like I am achieving my annotation goals by picking out the things I can relate to, the things I find important, and the things that stick out the most. I also have been good with my commentary and my text to world/text/personal connections.

  1. Surrounding Context: The surrounding context is Yo-Yo Ma relating back to his childhood and how he used the arts to express himself. He talks about how the arts is important to learning and being a human being. Yo-Yo Ma is very passionate about this and he shows us that no matter what you study you need the arts so you can understand people.
  2. Circumstantial Context: Yo-Yo Ma wrote this because he wants everyone to understand that life is nothing without a balance. He talks about how the arts and involved enough in school and that they need to be because that’s how people can really understand one another. Everyone can create and show expression through art.
  3. Intentional Context: Yo-Yo Ma’s opinions and intentions are clearly seen throughout this reading. He states what he believes and that it should be done for the better of the world. He clearly wants the arts and music to be involved with more of a scientific background, and for people to gain empathy to understand one another
  • Silk Road Project: founded in 1998 and is a non-profit organization. Bringing multicultural aspects into the world.
  • Empathy: to be able to understand someone and share feelings with them.
  • STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics.
